UK launches Information Defence centre and pitches global frontier-AI standards at the UN

Published 2 weeks, 2 days ago
Description
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his first major UN General Assembly speech to announce a National Centre for Information Defence and to pitch Britain as an “honest broker” on global frontier-AI standards. Burnham told the Assembly that Russia spends about £1.3bn a year manipulating information — via bots, fake sites, and forged branding of British organisations — and that AI will multiply that threat. The new centre is meant to detect, attribute and disrupt AI-enabled hostile-state disinformation, working with intelligence agencies, government, law enforcement and social platforms. On AI governance, he said frontier AI is among the defining challenges of the age, highlighted the UK AI Security Institute, and pledged to put AI at the heart of the UK’s G20 presidency next year, aiming for global principles on transparency, access and safe development. Coverage also notes that AISI testing remains voluntary — with Anthropic reportedly refusing its latest model — while a Norway-led declaration calling for mandatory pre-release testing of frontier models has not been signed by the US, China or the UK, and US President Donald Trump rejected “globalist” schemes to control AI.
