September 23 | Freedom Comes With Responsibility
Description
Today’s reading from Song of Solomon 1–3 and Galatians 2 invites us to think about freedom, love, and the responsibility that comes with what we’ve been given. Both passages remind us that healthy freedom is formed over time as desire, commitment, and faithfulness learn to exist together.
In Song of Solomon, love unfolds through desire, patience, belonging, and restraint. The relationship has a rhythm to it that reminds us that genuine love is never simply about satisfying ourselves, but about learning to honor another person faithfully.
In Galatians 2, Paul defends the freedom believers have received in Christ while confronting the pressure to turn that freedom back into religious bondage. His response to both false teachers and Peter shows that freedom carries responsibility because the way we use it communicates something about the gospel.
Together, these passages invite us to reflect on the freedoms we’ve been given and the kind of people those freedoms are forming us to become. They ask us to consider whether we think primarily about what we have the right to do, or whether our lives are becoming increasingly shaped by truth, responsibility, love, and faithfulness.
