Heat, Fans, and the Limits of Air-Gapped Security

Episode 5450 Published 3 weeks, 4 days ago
Description
A viral clip claims two air-gapped machines can talk through CPU heat, and technically that's true — BitWhisper demonstrated it in 2015. But at one to eight bits per hour and a range of forty centimeters, the demo barely moves a toy missile launcher. So why does the air-gap exfiltration literature keep growing? We walk through Dr. Mordechai Guri's Offensive Cyber Research Lab at Ben-Gurion University, the fan-speed channel (Fansmitter, AiR-ViBeR, SpiralSpy), magnetic fields that punch through Faraday cages (MAGNETO), hard-drive LEDs blinking at 5,800 times per second, and a video cable leaking to LoRa nodes 87 meters away. Then we ask the question nobody asks: has any of this ever been used on a real target? The answer is a list of USB drives — Stuxnet, Agent.BTZ, PlugX, USBferry, USBStealer — and one hardware implant eight miles from anything.
