Episode Details

A church building can look finished long before the story behind it is fully told. We’re looking ahead to DeSoto Hills Baptist Church’s 20th anniversary by sitting down with Brother Mark Manning, who remembers the early Carriage Hills days and the long, detailed road to moving onto the current campus in Southaven, Mississippi. From swinging by the job site after work to tracking the needs of the worship center, Mark gives a clear-eyed view of how real ministry gets built one decision at a time.

We talk through the planning process, the design changes that happened along the way, and the practical challenges you only notice when you’re trying to serve people every week. Mark shares why acoustics and sound mattered so much, how Memphis Audio helped test and shape the room, and why comfort and clarity are not “extra” features in a sanctuary. You’ll also hear about upgrades like the shift to a digital audio console, the realities of budget constraints, and even the gym floor that never turned the room into a true gym.

The conversation also looks back at the transition itself, described as a “new church out of an old church” marked by prayer and wise leadership, not conflict. Mark names behind-the-scenes contributors who deserve to be remembered, and he reflects on lasting joys like building out the orchestra area and watching a youth choir grow through tours and shared commitment. We close with a Midweek Moment from Exodus 35:10–11 on craftsmanship, excellence, and why God cares about the fine details, even the ones nobody sees.
