On Sept. 22, 1906, the Atlanta Race Massacre began as inflammatory and unverified reports helped incite white mobs to attack Black residents, businesses and neighborhoods. Historians estimate that 25 to 40 Black people were killed, along with two white people, during several days of racial violence.
