Description

AI has gotten dramatically better. Faster, cheaper, more capable. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, all of them have improved significantly. It’s amazing how far we’ve come… and how fast.
What hasn’t changed? AI still can’t do the strategic heavy lifting for your business. It can’t define your value proposition. It can’t identify what your customers actually need. It can’t set priorities based on your long-term business goals without you first doing the hard work necessary to figure out what those goals are.
AI can help you brainstorm. It can help you analyze data, create content, engage customers, and execute faster, smarter, or better. You still have to supply the judgment about what makes sense for your business.
There’s a story in this episode about Gil Amelio, the CEO of Apple before Steve Jobs returned, and my favorite dumb business quote of all time. Amelio supposedly said, “Apple is like a ship with a hole in the bottom leaking water, and my job is to get the ship pointed in the right direction.”
Um, what?
If your ship has a hole in the bottom, your job is to stop the water from coming in. Worrying about which direction it’s pointing guarantees that the only direction it’s going is… straight down.
That story illustrates the core point of this episode. AI is a great tool. Strategy ultimately is still your job.
In Digital Reset Foundations Episode 510, Tim Peter looks at the things that will never change about your business no matter what AI does: understanding your audience, solving real customer problems, and building trust and relationships with your customers.

- Busy teams moving in different directions
- Four questions belong at the center of your strategy: Who are we trying to gain as customers? What problem are we solving for them? Where do they go to learn, decide, and buy? Why should they choose us?
- AI should enter the process after you understand where you’re going, who you’r
