Worship Is Not Singing for 20 Minutes — It's Your Whole Life | Made for Something Part 6
Description
If worship is just the 20 minutes of singing before the sermon, we've shrunk something enormous down to something manageable — and worship was never meant to be manageable. In Part 6 of our "Made for Something" series, Pastor Mike Woodruff resets what worship actually means, and why it's a whole-life response, not a Sunday-morning activity.
Mike unpacks Romans 12, where Paul doesn't ask us to offer God our voices — he asks us to offer our bodies, our entire being, as a living sacrifice. Worship, Mike explains, comes from the old English "worth-ship" — declaring what's worth everything to us, through our songs, our calendars, our bank accounts, our obedience. And here's the part most people miss: worship doesn't just express what we value, it actually shapes us. Psalm 115 warns that we become like what we worship — money makes us grasping, status makes us anxious and hollow, but gazing at God's love and character shapes us into that likeness. Mike also addresses a common objection head-on: does God commanding our worship make him petty or needy? The answer is no — declaring God's worth isn't flattery or a tax we owe him, it's truth-telling, and it's the very thing that shifts our eyes off ourselves and into the peace Isaiah describes.
This is Part 6 of our multi-week series unpacking the Greatest Commandment, one piece at a time.

Frequently asked:
What does true worship mean in the Bible? Worship is the whole-life response to who God is — his power, glory, love, and mercy — expressed through how we live, not just through singing. Romans 12:1 describes offering our entire bodies as a "living sacrifice" as our true and proper worship.
Why does the Bible say "we become like what we worship"? Psalm 115 teaches that worship is formative, not just expressive — whatever we fix our devotion on (money, status, or God) gradually shapes our character to resemble it.
Does God need our worship? No — God lacks nothing and doesn't need worship for his own benefit. Commanding our worship is instead an act of truth-telling that redirects our attention off ourselves and onto God, which is where real peace comes from.
