ESPN’s Strength of Record metric says West Virginia has built the No. 7 résumé in all of college football—yet the Mountaineers remain outside the AP Top 25. How is that possible? We break down what ESPN’s metric actually means, why WVU’s victory over No. 25 Virginia is driving its elite résumé, and how wins over Coastal Carolina and UT Martin helped preserve the undefeated record. Plus, we explain why Saturday’s showdown with Oklahoma State gives Rich Rodriguez, Mike Hawkins Jr. and the Mountaineers an opportunity to make the AP voters’ disrespect impossible to defend. West Virginia is 3–0. It owns a ranked neutral-site victory. Its quarterback is playing like one of the best players in America. Only six teams have accomplished more according to ESPN—and the Mountaineers are still unranked. The polls are judging WVU’s reputation. The results are telling a completely different story.
