I Apologize to the Audience | 450

Episode 451 Published 4 weeks ago
Description

Episode 450 got its title from a little on-air friction. During the Converse Chuck Taylor ad segment, the Duchess apologized to the audience before John could describe the video he was playing, and John was mildly annoyed. "I apologize to the audience" turned into the running joke of the night. It came back on a Steelers tangent, and again when the chat started throwing money at Kate to wear a latex Trump mask. She wouldn't do it at any price.

Behind the bit, it's a loaded Monday. Trump bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, and John is almost with him on it. Ed Sheeran plays Lincoln Financial Field alone after the Macklemore "free Palestine" fallout cost him his openers and his band. A 93-year-old driver goes through the patio of a Jersey Shore restaurant, and the hosts take on the question nobody wants to answer: how old is too old to drive? Plus Lauren Boebert's fired-up video response to an ethics complaint, the Sydney Sweeney ad backlash, and Carrot Top's hospitalization.

The Duchess might be headed to iHeartRadio's Top Host. John relitigates Travis Kelce's Ponzi scheme losses. The Eagles escape Tennessee with 14 seconds left while the Steelers get flattened in New England.

Topics Covered:

  • Top Host — Kate got an email from Top Host, the iHeartRadio and Ryan Seacrest competition where the winner gets a six-episode podcast and $25K. John's convinced she'll win it.
  • Listening back: Travis Kelce's Ponzi scheme — John picks back up on last episode's argument. Kate laughed at Kelce getting scammed because she thinks he's not smart. John's comeback: he earned that money honestly, and dumb people don't deserve to get robbed either.
  • NFL weekend — The Eagles beat the Titans on a Jalen Hurts touchdown with 14 seconds left but still didn't cover. The Steelers got blown out by the Patriots, including a 4th-and-43 moment after a backward fumble while Kate was wearing her Polamalu #43.
  • How old is too old to drive? — A 93-year-old driver hit the gas instead of the brake at Meg's Grill in Lavallette, NJ, killing a 56-year-old Toms River woman and injuring seven. Kate thinks testing should start in the late 60s or early 70s. John, turning 65 in two weeks, swears he can still parallel park. The talk spirals into seniors without public transit, QR code menus, 411, pay phones, and phone cords that reached the basement.
  • Sydney Sweeney vs. Lindsay Clancy — A street interviewer asks which woman hurts women more, and the answer infuriates both hosts. Kate: Sweeney is a businesswoman using her talents. John: The real problem for women isn't the patriarchy; it's other women.
  • Ed Sheeran plays Philly solo — With no openers and no backing band after the Macklemore "free Palestine" walkout, Sheeran carried the Linc himself. John says real talent shines through. The chat's take: never apologize to the mob.
  • Carrot Top hospitalized — Scott Thompson, 61, is in the hospital recovering after what TMZ reports was a suicide attempt. His Luxor show, the longest-running in Las Vegas history, was canceled. If you're struggling, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
  • Converse ad controversy — A freeze-frame of a Chuck Taylor ad with a spotlit white skirt and dangling sneakers got called KKK and lynching imagery. John thinks the outrage was manufactured from one frame and says Converse should have stopped apologizing. Kate thinks it wasn't a lynching, just a dumb-looking ad, and she still wants red Chucks. Also: Bobo sneakers and John's pitch for memory-foam "Gen X Chucks."
  • Skeleton-hand yoga pants — John caught the Duchess on X loving black yoga pants with skeleton hands cupping each cheek. She loves them and says she will never wear them in public.
