You know the picture. You have seen it on a studio wall, on the back of a book, on an app that wanted eleven dollars a month. Seven colored disks stacked up a vertical spine — red at the base, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet at the top. Somebody told you it was ancient, thousands of years old, handed down from the Vedic tradition. It has an author. His name was Charles Webster Leadbeater. He was English. He was a former Anglican priest. He published his book in 1927 when he was 73 years old, with ten color plates painted to his instruction. It is the single most influential book about chakras ever written in the English language, and almost nobody talks about him.

I take you through the whole story. What he actually said he saw. The chart he drew, which is not the chart you were taught. He has no sacral center. His second center is the spleen. His heart chakra is gold, not green. His brow does not have two petals — it has 96. His crown turns inside out in adepts, and he says that is what the halo is. He gives a physical mechanism for the chakras that nobody teaches — the petals are standing waves. He describes three separate forces running through you — primary force from above, vitality from the sun, kundalini from the earth — and warns his students that raising the third one prematurely can turn men into monsters. I also tell you the hard things about him, because his own biographer proved decades later that he invented parts of his own life story, and there was a scandal in 1906 that never entirely went away. I hold all of it together carefully. We take him seriously because there is something here worth taking seriously, and we hold him loosely because he did not ask for anything more.
