How Task Training at Home Can Give You the Wrong Idea About Service Dog Potential
Description
Your dog can learn the tasks perfectly at home and still not be capable of doing the job of a service dog.
I wanted Fitz to be a service dog badly enough to train him myself. He learned real tasks, including retrieval, deep pressure therapy, and migraine alerts. At home, he was good at them. Then we went out in public, and the dog I hoped he could become collided with the dog actually standing in front of me. Because learning the tasks is only one part of what a service dog has to be able to do.
You'll hear:
- Why a dog can successfully learn service dog tasks at home and still struggle with what the job requires in public
- What happened when I had to separate what I needed Fitz to become from what he was actually capable of
- Why changing the plan doesn't mean the training was wasted or that your dog failed
Press play if you've ever looked at your dog and wondered if they could become a service dog, or had to accept that what you hoped they could do wasn't what they were actually capable of.
