The Killing of an Asian Child | Nayantara Ali (1994)

Episode 61 Published 3 weeks, 2 days ago
Description

In November 1994, 11-year-old Nayantara Ali left her home in East London and set off for school. She never reached the school gates.

25 days later, her naked body was discovered just 20 yards from her family home — wrapped in a bedsheet, concealed inside a piece of carpet and buried beneath rubble and debris.

Even more disturbingly, police had already searched the exact location where her body was eventually found.

In this episode of **Crimes That Haunt Us**, we examine the disappearance and murder of Nayantara Ali, reconstructing the final known movements of an innocent 11-year-old girl and exploring the unanswered questions that have surrounded her case for more than three decades.

What happened to Nayan between leaving home and disappearing?

Where was she held before her death?

How did her body end up so close to her family home?

And why was she apparently missed during earlier searches of the area?

We examine the evidence surrounding the distinctive pea-green fitted sheet and unusual circular piece of pink carpet used to conceal her body, the police investigation, the family's concerns about the initial response, the wider community reaction, and the possibility that whoever disposed of Nayan's body knew the local area.

Despite the passage of more than 30 years, nobody has been publicly identified, arrested or convicted for Nayantara's murder.

Her school uniform, PE kit, umbrella and distinctive Take That bag have never been publicly recovered.

The Metropolitan Police continue to regard the case as an open investigation.

**Nayantara was just 11 years old. She deserved to grow up. She deserved a future. Most importantly, she deserved justice.**
