Ole Miss Finally Has Its Full Secondary | Ole Miss vs LSU Gameday

Episode 3026 Published 1 week, 5 days ago
Description

Every conversation about this game has been about the atmosphere. That's the wrong line. Ole Miss gets its full starting secondary on the field for the first time all season — the one open question on this team since Louisville — and it arrives in the same week Louisiana Tech put three interceptions and five sacks on Sam Leavitt. The secondary does not have to be good tonight. It has to be serviceable. That is the whole game.

Hours until LSU. College GameDay is in the Grove.

Steven Willis is joined by Tom Vanderford, the mayor of Corinth, for the fan's view of the biggest home game Oxford has had in sixty-four years. They land independently on the same X-factor, the same read on LSU, and nearly the same final score — and Vanderford names the one thing Ole Miss got in September that LSU has not gotten yet.

📌 THREE THINGS

1. Vanderford's opening point is the one nobody made all week: Ole Miss has not had its full starting secondary all season, and it gets it back tonight. The secondary is the whole conditional on this defense, and it does not need to be good. It has to be serviceable — because if the back end holds, the front seven stops getting nerfed and Maldonado, Blake Purchase and Landon Barnes get turned loose.

2. Shareef Denson is the name to watch, and not for the obvious reason. He is the one defensive back with no stink on him from the first two weeks. If Denson holds up at strong safety, Edwin Joseph slides from nickel to corner and the whole back end reorganizes into something that lets Ole Miss rush three, drop eight, and never play man against Sam Leavitt.

3. Two people got to the same place from opposite directions. Steven: LSU does not know what its own soft spots are, because nothing has forced them to find out. Vanderford, unprompted, twenty minutes later: "Somebody jumped up and punched us in the mouth and we had to respond. I don't think LSU's had that yet." Same argument, two voices, no coordination.
