Peyton Lodge and Coach open on the weekend that proves the whole premise of this show — 50-year-olds crashing in fraternity houses in Oxford because there isn't a hotel room left in the state. From there it's the NBA's Clippers ruling, handed down September 2, which required Kawhi Leonard to pay $700,000, fined the organization $30 million, stripped five first-round picks between 2029 and 2033, and suspended Steve Ballmer for a year.1 Coach won't put it on Leonard — he blames the agents and the people above him, drawing on his own years working for a billionaire — while Peyton is stuck on the sheer size of numbers that barely register for an owner worth what Ballmer is worth. The through-line Coach lands on: losing a year of access will sting an owner far more than any fine.

Joe Buck's new six-year ESPN extension, reported at roughly $108 million, gets the same treatment.2 Peyton's question is whether anyone has ever turned a game on for the announcer; Coach's answer is that the money isn't buying tune-in, it's buying the best baseball voice available ahead of a Super Bowl and a World Series bid — and then he tells the story of the night Joe Buck beat him back to the hotel bar in Kansas City, police escort and all, and overheard exactly what Coach was saying about him. In the "Roll It" segment the guys work through Deshaun Watson's midweek press-conference line about the media expecting 400 yards and five touchdowns a week3, Sophie Cunningham's comments on the search for a new WNBA commissioner as Cathy Engelbert heads for the exit at the end of the year4, and Lane Kiffin's leaked halftime speech from LSU's rout of Clemson.5 Coach is convinced the Kiffin audio was planted — and says that's exactly why it works.

That sets up Saturday in Oxford, where No. 7 LSU visits No. 8 Ole Miss with College GameDay on site5, and Coach reaches back to 1997 and the night Kansas State finally beat Nebraska — the closest thing in his career to what Oxford is about to feel like. The picks close the show: both guys are on Cincinnati at Houston, both like Jacksonville getting points in Denver, Coach wants the Chiefs' spread and nothing else, and both see the Giants as live dogs in Los Angeles.6 Opinions here are the hosts' own and the spreads were quoted at record time — check current numbers before you act on anything.
