Engineering After Disaster: The Massive Genoa Bridge Rebuild | FD Engineering

After the catastrophic collapse of Genoa’s Morandi Bridge in 2018, Italy faced one of the worst infrastructure disasters in modern European history. With the city divided and a critical transport link destroyed, engineers, architects, and construction crews raced against time to demolish the old structure and build a new bridge.

Designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, the replacement bridge was completed in less than two years despite enormous technical challenges and the Covid-19 pandemic. From demolition and massive steel lifts to complex structural engineering, this is the story of how Genoa rebuilt one of Europe’s most important crossings.
