At Lufthansa Technik Malta, a team of 700 specialists works behind the scenes to keep air travel among the safest in the world. Their expertise lies in the complex inspection, maintenance, and overhaul of aircraft from airlines across the globe.

Their latest challenge: an Airbus A330-300 known as “Kilo Romeo.” With just 40 days before its next scheduled flight, the team must complete an intensive overhaul requiring more than 25,000 man-hours.

Inside the hangar, the aircraft is stripped down to its core. Engineers dismantle the entire cabin—removing seats, galleys, lavatories, and panels—before each component is inspected, repaired, and refurbished in specialized workshops. At the same time, the aircraft’s structure is examined in detail, from the fuselage and insulation to kilometers of wiring—ensuring that not a single element goes unchecked.

Outside, another team scans the aircraft for damage, including lightning strike impacts that must be carefully repaired. The massive Rolls-Royce engines are removed and overhauled, while technicians inspect everything from the wings to the fuel tanks.

Working against the clock, every system is tested and retested. The result: an aircraft restored to peak condition—ready to return safely to the skies.
