A negative culture is supposed to mean the infection has gone. Ruth Kriz is a nurse practitioner who spent 35 years on chronic UTI and interstitial cystitis.

She says that in a chronic case a clean result often means the test could not reach it. The bacteria may be embedded in biofilm in the bladder wall. A culture may not find them. Antibiotics may not reach them. I asked her what accurate testing looks like instead and why she treats these infections in layers.
