September 17 is The Feast of the Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi. This feast day honors the moment St. Francis received the stigmata—bodily marks resembling the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. St. Francis received the wounds in September 1224 while praying and fasting on Mount La Verna in Tuscany, Italy. St. Francis is the first historically recorded person to bear the stigmata. The event signifies a deep spiritual union with Christ's passion and love.
