The Varosity AI GTM Report — Sep 16: OpenAI Turns the Ad Itself Into an Agent

Episode 99 Published 1 month ago
Description

A rare day where the demand side and the disclosure side moved at once, in opposite directions. OpenAI announced Sponsored Agents — tap an ad in ChatGPT and instead of a landing page you open a labeled conversation with the advertiser's own agent — alongside an Ads Manager plugin that builds campaigns in plain language, AI-assisted creative generated from your landing page, and integrations with HubSpot as the first CRM partner and Shopify as the first ecommerce partner. Hours later, Governor Newsom signed SB 1050, making it an unlawful advertising practice in California to publish an ad that prominently features a synthetic performer without a clear and conspicuous disclosure. Also today: Google opened early access to Home MCP, letting Claude, ChatGPT and other agents take control actions across Nest and Matter devices; Meta launched Meta One, bundling Muse image and video generation with business tiers up to $499/month, and shipped a WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server that lets coding agents configure business messaging by describing it in chat. From yesterday: Zoom unveiled an AI revenue operating system with Engage, Forecast and Common Room, and Bazaarvoice and Kiri Masters published research showing 65% of shoppers click the brand they already know when an AI tool presents options. Jack King connects the California law to the wider disclosure beat: under the EU AI Act's Article 50, enforceable since August 2, the model marks the output but the brand that publishes it has to disclose it — and prove it, across every model it used.

  • California signs the synthetic performer disclosure law — SB 1050 (Ashby) requires clear and conspicuous disclosure on ads that prominently feature an AI-created figure or voice, and drops the actual-knowledge shield New York's law provides. (Office of the Governor · Bill text · ArentFox Schiff on the NY law)
  • Meta prices the stack and hands WhatsApp setup to agents — Meta One bundles Muse image and video with business tiers from $14.99 to $499/month, and a new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT create accounts, register API access and build message templates. (The AI Insider · Dataconomy)
  • Google opens Home MCP, and agents get hands — Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes, OpenClaw and Antigravity can now monitor devices, review event history and take control actions across the Google Home ecosystem. (TechCrunch · Unite.AI)
  • Zoom comes for the re
