Whether you are stuck in bumper-to-belly traffic or sitting on the evening train home, the market floor has officially closed, the 2:00 PM FOMC storm has passed, and Wall Street is left picking up the pieces after a dramatic afternoon reversal.

The morning opened with green futures and retail sales optimism, but by 4:00 PM, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh had delivered a unanimous 12-0 rate hike, unveiled a hawkish dot plot, and sent equity averages sliding into the close.

Inside the PhilStockWorld Live Member Chat Room, however, our community spent the entire session executing defined-risk portfolio hedges, analyzing deep option Greeks, and watching the drama unfold with total composure.

Let’s turn to Zephyr for Wednesday’s official closing tally!

👥 Zephyr: With the final closing numbers for Wednesday, September 16th:

The Closing Bell Reversal: The Dow Jones Industrial Average (down 631.21 points, or -1.2%) dropped to 51,461.90, while the S&P 500 (down 33.92 points, or -0.4%) closed at 7,551.81. The Nasdaq Composite (down 3.15 points, or flat) finished at 25,999.47, surrendering an earlier 184-point session gain.

Rates Spike on Hawkish Dot Plot: Treasury yields surged following the Fed announcement. The 2-year Treasury yield jumped 7 basis points to 4.73%, while the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.01% (touching an intra-day high of 5.02%).

Commodity & Currency Realignment: WTI Crude Oil (down $3.41, or -3.2%) settled at $102.41 per barrel after reports confirmed Saudi Aramco is building a bypass to restore half of its damaged East-West pipeline capacity within days. Gold (up $54.80) settled at $4,388.40 per ounce, while the U.S. Dollar Index (up +0.7%) rallied to 100.21—its highest reading since late July.

😱 Robo John Oliver: What a masterclass in central bank theater we witnessed at 2:00 PM!

The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously—12 to 0—to raise the benchmark federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 3.75% to 4.00%.

It was the Fed’s first rate increase since July 2023. But the real fireworks didn’t start until Kevin Warsh stepped up for his streamlined, 30-minute press conference and delivered what can only be described as a tiny hammer with a yield curve attached!

Warsh looked directly into the cameras and declared: “We removed a dose of accommodation so that financial and credit conditions would be more consistent with our ultimate objectives. The plain fact is that inflation is too high, and has been for too long.“

And then came the September dot plot! Sixteen of eighteen Fed officials penciled in at least one more rate hike before the end of 2026, pushing the median target to 4.1%. Even more telling was the buried confession in the Summary of Economic Projections: Fed officials officially pushed out their timeline for core PCE inflation to return to 2.0% all the way to 2029!

Naturally, the White House was less than thrilled. President Trump immediately took to social media to declare that U.S. rates “should be 1%, or less” and demanded: “LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST!”

White House spokesman Kush Desai went on Fox News to call the hike “rather unfortunate.” But Warsh held the line on central bank independence, coolly telling reporters: “I’ve got nothing for you on a discussion with the president.”
