Episode Details

The WNBA is poised for a leadership transition as outgoing commissioner Cathy Engelbert prepares to retire at the end of 2026, leaving behind a league transformed by record-breaking growth—but also facing questions about player relations. While Engelbert’s tenure saw unprecedented expansion, rising revenues, and global attention, critics argue her time was marked by missed opportunities, especially with the emergence of superstar Caitlin Clark. Player Sophie Cunningham, speaking with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, outlined key priorities for the next leader: prioritizing player voices, fostering open dialogue, and building unity across the league. She emphasized that even though commissioners serve owners, genuine respect and communication with athletes are non-negotiable for long-term success. As the search begins, the WNBA stands at a crossroads—ready to build on its momentum while forging deeper ties with the players who make it thrive.
