Abram believes God, then asks a question many of us are almost afraid to say out loud: “How can I know?” We sit with that moment in Genesis 15:8–21 and trace how God responds not with shame, but with a covenant that speaks in blood, symbols, and unstoppable grace. Along the way, we slow down and explain the ancient covenant ritual of divided sacrifices and what it meant for two parties to walk between the pieces. 

Then the passage gets even more intense: the waiting, the circling birds of prey, the deep sleep, and the terror of great darkness. We connect Abram driving the birds away to the ongoing reality of spiritual warfare, and we listen as God reveals a prophetic timeline: Israel’s future slavery in a foreign land, His judgment on Egypt, and a deliverance so complete they leave with possessions. We also wrestle with God’s patience and sovereignty over nations, including the delayed judgment on the Amorites. 

Finally, the center of the whole scene: a smoking firepot and a flaming torch pass between the pieces, representing God’s presence. Abram does not walk the path. God does, which is why this promise is unconditional. We tie that truth to the gospel with clear, hope-filled language: our rescue is “all of God and none of me,” fulfilled in Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb, who delivers us from bondage to sin by grace through faith.
