Citi Confirms More Job Cuts Before Year End (Layoffs 2026)
Description
Citibank layoffs 2026 are accelerating. Citi CFO Gonzalo Luchetti says the bank expects to pull forward a roughly $500 million spending package through the end of 2026 that includes additional severance specifically intended to reduce headcount in some areas.
The entire $500 million is not severance. It also includes growth investments such as cards and Wealth marketing. Citi has not disclosed the severance portion, number of jobs, departments or locations. But the direction is clear: the bank expects to spend more money reducing headcount before year end.
This is a material escalation from The Grind Hotline's July Citi investigation. By June, Citi had already recorded roughly $800 million in first half severance, approximately what it originally expected to spend during the entire year. Direct staff fell from approximately 226,000 at the end of 2025 to 219,000 in June, a net decline of 7,000 employees in six months and 11,000 year over year.
In July, additional severance was only a possibility. In September, it became part of Citi's plan. Possible has become planned.
This episode examines which Citi workers face the strongest pressure, including transformation and remediation staff, programme managers, contractors, data teams, operations and servicing workers, KYC and client onboarding teams, manual controls, trade confirmation work, underwriting and credit support, legacy technology, application support, manual testing, expensive management layers and managing directors.
Citi has not confirmed that every role in those categories will be cut. They belong on the risk map because Citi is removing temporary transformation costs while mapping more than 100 end to end processes for technology and AI automation.
