Automotive History Proves One Decision Can Echo For Decades

Season 2026 Episode 175 Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description

A single week on the calendar can hold the whole arc of car culture: obsession, innovation, shortcuts, and consequences. We start in 1948 with what sounds like a normal used-car buy, when Al Moss picks up an MG TC in Southern California. That small British sports car lights a fuse. Racing, driving around Los Angeles, and frustration with weak dealer support eventually push Moss to open his own shop, which grows into Moss Motors, one of the best-known sources for MG and British sports car parts in America.

Then we jump to speed and controversy at Talladega. The inaugural Talladega 500 in 1969 brings the Dodge Charger Daytona to NASCAR, complete with the dramatic nose and massive rear wing that defined an era of homologation specials. We talk about the driver boycott over tire failure fears, why the Daytona still wins, and how the Plymouth Superbird fits into the same aero story, right down to the practical vinyl-top detail that helps you tell them apart.

From there it’s rapid product evolution with the first major 1966 Ford Mustang update and what those changes say about the Pony Wars and manufacturing pressure. We also highlight Road Atlanta’s opening day with Can-Am and how it becomes a landmark American road course. Finally, the mood shifts hard with Dieselgate: the 2015 EPA announcement that Volkswagen and Audi diesels allegedly used software to recognize emissions testing, turning a technical issue into one of the biggest corporate scandals in modern American history.

If you love automotive history, classic cars, NASCAR legends, the Ford Mustang story, and the real-world impact of emissions regulation, hit play. Subscribe, share with a car friend, and leave us a review with the moment that surprised you most.
