Madison alders rejected a last-minute budget amendment in 2025 that would have paid to outfit patrol officers with body-worn cameras. The issue is back in the news, after Madison police shot and killed Corey Ruiz in late July. Released last week, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway’s 2027 Executive Budget includes a plan to spend nearly 415,000 dollars over the next three years to deploy the cameras citywide. Madison Police Chief John Patterson joined the Finance Committee Monday to explain what the rollout would look like – and why they want to kick things off next year with a more limited scope.
