Back to EpisodesJames part 6 - Chapter Five On Money And Justice
Description
Wealth can feel like armour, right up until the moment it starts rusting. As we reach the final chapter of James, we sit with one of the Bible’s most direct warnings about money, injustice, and the spiritual danger of building your life on what can rot, corrode, or collapse overnight. James chapter 5 does not condemn money itself, but it does confront the love of money, the temptation to hoard in the “last days”, and the very real harm done when workers are denied what they are owed.
From there, we lift our eyes to the future James wants believers to live for: the Lord’s coming is near, and patience is not weakness. We talk about the farmer who cannot force the harvest, the Old Testament prophets who kept going without seeing the results they longed for, and Job’s story as a reminder that God’s mercy has the final word. This is Christian perseverance rooted in resurrection hope, not positive thinking.
We also slow down over James’s teaching on prayer for the sick, including anointing with oil, and we speak honestly about the fact that healing does not always come on our timetable. Prayer is not magic or a technique to make outcomes happen; it is placing the whole situation into the Father’s hands, trusting his wisdom and goodness. James then points to Elijah, “a man just like us”, to show what fervent prayer can do through ordinary believers, and he closes with a call for the church to care for those who are wandering and to hold one another steady.
