Finebaum Says It's A Must-Win For Kiffin. He's Right. | Ole Miss MUST WATCH Green

Episode 3017 Published 2 weeks, 3 days ago
Description

Every preview of Ole Miss and LSU this week has been about whether the Rebels can handle the moment. That's the wrong question. LSU is ranked higher, favored on the road, and carrying the most expensive roster in college football — and Lane Kiffin left a thirteen-win program to go build it. The pressure belongs to the man flying in, not the one already here.

Three days to LSU.

Steven Willis puts Paul Finebaum's must-win verdict next to the money, the ranking and the betting line, and finds an asymmetry nobody is talking about. Then the LSU player who actually decides Saturday night — and he isn't the quarterback. Last week he lined up in six different places, including quarterback. And finally, the storyline that somehow went national this week, started by both head coaches on the same afternoon without either one being asked twice.

📌 THREE THINGS

1. The receipts run one direction. LSU is No. 7, Ole Miss is No. 8, and LSU is favored on the road. CBS Sports polled 50+ athletic directors, general managers, cap executives and agents and put LSU's roster No. 1 in America — north of $40 million, by some estimates as high as $55 million. Ole Miss came back in the upper $30 millions. Higher ranked, favored, better funded, and Kiffin left a 13-win program for a 7-6 one to get there. Paul Finebaum, asked if Saturday is a must-win for him: "Yes. Yes. Yes."

2. Trey'Dez Green is the matchup problem, not the quarterback. He's 6-7 and 242 out of Zachary, Louisiana, wears LSU's legacy No. 7, led every SEC tight end with seven touchdowns last season, and his twelve career scores are an LSU record at the position. Against Louisiana Tech: 6 catches, 104 yards, a touchdown, 45 yards after the catch, four of the six moving the chains. Last week LSU lined him up wide, in the slot, in-line, at H-back, at fullback and at quarterback on a direct snap.

3. The concept they run him on attacks discipline, not talent. Green motions flat across the formation while the zone run goes away from him. The edge defender crashes to kill the seal block — which is exactly what he's coached to do. Third time, they slip Green out behind him. Pete Golding has now said twice in four days that his defense has "an angle issue" with guys "overrunning the football and not having gap control." That's the game.
