On the morning of September 11, 2001, two D.C. Air National Guard fighter pilots were ordered into the sky on a "suicide mission" to take down United Airlines Flight 93. Because their F-16 fighter jets were completely unarmed, the pilots planned to stop the hijacked airliner by ramming their own jets directly into it.
