Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes the colourful and outspoken Bobby Legend, a man whose extraordinary travels gave him a firsthand look at Afghanistan during the turbulent 1970s. Long before Afghanistan became synonymous in the Western world with the Taliban, terrorism and decades of warfare, Legend travelled there during an era when adventurous Western travellers, students and members of the counterculture journeyed through the country along what became known as the Hippie Trail. Bobby would ultimately spend approximately four years in Afghanistan, witnessing a society dramatically different from the one the world would later come to know. According to Bobby's account, Afghanistan at the time could be both welcoming and extraordinarily dangerous. He describes becoming acquainted with members of Afghan society at levels rarely accessible to foreign travellers—including a friendship he says developed with the son of Afghanistan's reigning king. His experiences exposed him to the country's tribal traditions, political tensions and rapidly changing social landscape. Bobby says he could see signs that revolutionary change was coming and that the Afghanistan he had experienced was beginning to disappear. Bobby's adventure eventually became considerably more serious. He recounts nearly being killed while attempting to leave Afghanistan, an experience that gave him a very personal perspective on the dangers developing within the region. Years later, as Afghanistan became associated with the Taliban, Osama bin Laden and international terrorism, Bobby reflected upon how profoundly the country had changed since his years there. His story offers listeners the recollections of a traveller who experienced Afghanistan before decades of invasion, revolution, civil war and extremist rule transformed the country.
