Before Fan TV, social media and football influencers, supporters had fanzines.

Dotun Adebayo and Tim Vickery are joined by writer and broadcaster Daniel Gray to tell the story of the football fanzine movement that challenged clubs, fought racism, questioned authority and helped change British football.

Daniel is the author of Fanzine: The Story of Football’s Alternative Press, his new book exploring the extraordinary supporter-led movement that grew from the terraces during the 1980s and 1990s.

After researching around 8,000 fanzines and speaking to more than 40 editors and contributors, Daniel explains how homemade publications became a genuine force inside football.

They discuss why football clubs were frightened of fanzines, the campaigns against ID cards and racism, Hillsborough through the eyes of supporters, the influence of punk and Private Eye, Brian Clough’s furious encounter with a Nottingham Forest fanzine and why Daniel does not see modern Fan TV as the true successor to fanzine culture.

Plus, why a new generation increasingly tired of living entirely online could yet keep the printed football fanzine alive.
