CAPTION 1892 FOR THE RE-ELECTION.

Cleveland's Second Term Confronts National Crises
Troy Senik, Part Two: Senik details Grover Cleveland's return to the presidency in 1892, making him the only U.S.president to serve non-consecutive terms. His second term was immediately defined by the Panic of 1893, a severe economic depression fueled by gold reserves depletion and monetary instability surrounding bimetallism. Cleveland defended the gold standard, alienating populist Democrats led by William Jennings Bryan. In 1893, Cleveland underwent secret surgery aboard a yacht to remove a cancerous growth from his upper jaw, keeping it hidden from the public and Vice President Adlai Stevenson. On foreign policy, Cleveland expanded the Monroe Doctrine during a Venezuelan border dispute with Great Britain and opposed German aggression in Samoa. However, he strongly condemned the illicit overthrow of Hawaii's monarchy by American sugar planters. In retirement at Princeton, Cleveland interacted with Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, leaving a legacy of incorruptible integrity. (2)
