Plato Witnessed Syracuse's Rise Of Tyranny
James Romm, Bard College, author of Plato and the Tyrant: The Fall of Greece's Greatest Dynasty and the Making of a Philosophic Masterpiece, Part One: Host John Batchelor interviews Romm regarding Dionysius the Elder's rise to power as archon of Syracuse following the Peloponnesian War. Dionysius consolidated rule using a fortified island peninsula and an unorthodox double marriage on a single day, creating fierce family rivalries. Syracusan court life became notorious for excessive feasting, heavy drinking, and luxury. Plato made three visits to Syracuse, initially connecting through Dion, the ruler's brother-in-law. After Dionysius I died, Dion invited Plato to tutor Dionysius the Younger toward enlightened constitutional governance. However, Dionysius II grew suspicious of Dion's letters to Carthaginian diplomats, exiling Dion and placing Plato under house arrest. Plato was eventually rescued by Archytas of Tarentum. Romm explains that these chaotic Syracusan political experiences directly informed Plato's depiction of tyranny and the philosopher-king in the Republic. (1)
