Trump backs Irish reunification in diplomatic bombshell
Published 3 weeks ago
Description
President Donald Trump has reiterated his support for Irish reunification during a weekend visit to his Irish golf resort for the Irish Open, stating it would be 'natural' to unite Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland. The comments have caused a diplomatic storm with Britain, as Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and any reunification would require a referendum by the Irish people under the Good Friday Agreement. Trump doubled down on his position despite the controversy, with the remarks flying in the face of the historic 1998 peace accord.
