י"א שהמאורע ד"צום גדלי'" אירע בר"ה עצמו (אלא שדחו את הצום ליום חול שלאח"ז). ולכאו' הענין ד"צום גדלי'" הוא להיפך מר"ה שהוא זמן שמחה, ובאופן ד"אכלו משמנים ושתו ממתקים ושלחו מנות לאין נכון לו . . כי חדות ה' היא מעזכם", ומזה מובן במכ"ש בנוגע לרוחניות הענינים, ובפרט ביום שה' מקבל בשלימות את ה"תמליכוני עליכם"?! ומכיון שכל דבר הוא הוראה בעבודת ה', ובפרט ענין כזה, צ"ל קשר בין הענינים, ואדרבה – מכיון שנצטוינו "להעלות בקודש" צ"ל שיש עילוי ב"צום גדלי'" על חודש אלול, ימי הסליחות, ערב ר"ה ואפי' על ר"ה עצמו! והביאור: בר"ה קיבלו בנ"י ברצון על עצמם את מלכותו ית'. אבל ב"צום גדלי'", בגלל המאורע החמורה שאירע עם גדלי' (שהי' חמור יותר מהחורבן עצמו), ניתן ליהודי הכח לתקן ו"להעלות", ע"י ענין התשובה, גם את כל הדורות שקדמו לו! ובאופן שגם ענינים הבלתי רצויים נעשים "זכויות" ממש!

There is an opinion that the event commemorated by Tzom Gedaliah took place on Rosh Hashanah itself (and the fast was postponed to the following weekday). Seemingly, the theme of Tzom Gedaliah is the very opposite of Rosh Hashanah, which is a time of joy, as the verse states regarding Rosh Hashanah, “…eat fat foods and drink sweet drinks, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared...for the joy of Hashem is your strength,” not to mention the spiritual dimension of this celebration, particularly on a day when Hashem fully accepts the Jewish people’s coronation of Him as their King. But since there is a lesson for Divine service to be learned from everything, there must be a connection between these two themes – in fact, since we are commanded to “ascend in holiness,” it follows that Tzom Gedaliah must represent an ascent beyond the month of Elul, the days of Selichos, Erev Rosh Hashanah, and even Rosh Hashanah itself. The explanation is as follows: On Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish people willingly accepted upon themselves Hashem’s sovereignty. On Tzom Gedaliah, however, because of the tremendous tragedy involving Gedaliah (which was even more severe than the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash) a Jew is granted the power, through the service of teshuvah, to perfect and elevate all the generations that preceded him, and in such a way that even the undesirable matters are transformed into actual merits.
