Don't Go It Alone
Description
It is striking how many of Martin Luther’s personal letters to various individuals deal with the subject of melancholy — that complex mix of emotions, including loneliness, a sense of being forgotten or unseen, overwhelm, even despair, and loss of meaning. The Reformer’s consistent advice — don’t go it alone; get out and be with fellow Christians!
A former, beloved pastor of ours always marveled how, in engaging with others, joys are multiplied, but sorrows are diminished. The Creator knows what His creatures need. Involvement with others is key to a happy spiritual life. With fellowship comes resilience, empathy, perspective, and elation. To quote C. S. Lewis, we are “surprised by joy!” And our purpose in this life is renewed.
Thank God for the gift of others!
