Think Pieces & Conversations — Episode 112
Big Bank Take Lil' Bank

What happens when the next generation of gaming arrives before the people buying it are financially ready for it?

In Episode 112 of Think Pieces & Conversations, I question whether gamers actually need—or even want—the next generation of consoles right now.

We’re entering an era where a new Xbox, PlayStation 6, premium PCs, GPUs, memory, storage, and the rest of the hardware required to stay on the cutting edge could push gaming further into luxury-product territory. If a next-generation console approaches or crosses the $1,000 mark, what exactly is going to convince somebody to upgrade?

What is the feature?

What is the experience?

What can Project Helix or PlayStation 6 give us that the hardware sitting underneath our televisions right now simply cannot?

Because newer doesn’t automatically mean necessary.

We already see this in smartphones. Someone can own an older iPhone and still accomplish almost everything a person with the newest model can do. Gaming could be approaching the same problem: technology keeps advancing, but the practical reason to replace perfectly functional hardware becomes harder to explain.

And affordability is only one side of this conversation.

The other side is Big Bank Take Lil' Bank.

I get into Microsoft and Sony, their very different financial positions, and what happens when competition becomes less about which console is better and more about which company can afford to keep playing the game.

I discuss some of Sony’s recent decisions, its relationship with major creators and intellectual properties, why losing valuable talent or partnerships could become increasingly important, and my theory about what happens when one competitor has the financial resources of Microsoft behind it.

Does the company with the biggest bank eventually get to take what the smaller bank can no longer afford to protect?

And if hardware keeps becoming more expensive while companies simultaneously fight over developers, intellectual property, ecosystems, subscriptions, PCs, handhelds, and digital distribution—

who can actually afford the next generation?

The gamers?

The companies?

Or only the biggest players left standing?
