A Reflection For When We Worry About Being Punished
Sometimes we worry about the consequences of our poor choices.
And Bible translations that describe God as jealous and punishing sin can heighten our anxiety.
Here is an alternative that is faithful to the text:
“God is passionate (קַנָּא, qannāʾ) about us and attends (פָּקַד, pāqad) even to the generational consequences of our sin, as God’s steadfast love (חֶסֶד, ḥesed) runs for a thousand generations.”
— from Exodus 20:5–6
We all bear the consequences of our actions. And sometimes our friends, family, and neighbors do as well.
Even then, God’s love accompanies us.
