Label Our Beef Petition Available for MCOOL

The National MCOOL Coalition is launching a new petition calling on the White House and Congress to restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling, or MCOOL, for beef.

The coalition represents farm and ranch groups, rural organizations, consumers, and other agricultural interests.

The petition is called “Label Our Beef.”

It comes after President Donald Trump temporarily increased the quota for lean beef trimmings by 300-thousand metric tons. That’s more than 660 million pounds of additional beef imports allowed between September first and November 30th.

The move comes as the U.S. is already importing record amounts of beef, and follows an earlier increase in the beef import quota from Argentina.

The MCOOL Coalition says those additional imports make country-of-origin labeling even more important.

Supporters say consumers should be able to tell the difference between beef from cattle born, raised and harvested in the United States, and beef produced somewhere else.

There is also growing support for MCOOL in Congress.

Earlier this month, the Senate Agriculture Committee voted 17-to-6 to advance mandatory country-of-origin labeling as part of the Farm Bill.

The coalition is now asking cattle producers, consumers, and supporters of American agriculture to sign and share the petition.

Farm Action Fund President Joe Maxwell says if Washington is going to allow hundreds of millions more pounds of imported beef into the country, consumers should at least have the right to know where that beef came from.

R-CALF USA President Dave Hyde says MCOOL would give Americans the ability to choose a true product of the USA.

And the Coalition for a Prosperous America says every year Congress fails to restore MCOOL is another loss for American ranchers and consumers.

The message from the coalition is simple: Label our beef, let consumers decide, and let American ranchers compete.
