Fleetwood Mac Made a MASTERPIECE While Falling Apart | Rumours
đď¸ CAN AN ALBUM REALLY BE CONSIDERED PERFECT?
This week on Hooligan Nation: A KISS-Centric Podcast, Anthony, Father Rocco, Black Diamond Dave and DD-Deb step outside the KISS universe to tackle one of the most celebratedâand successfulâalbums ever recorded:
FLEETWOOD MAC â RUMOURS
Released in 1977, Rumours became a landmark of rock music, combining incredible songwriting, unforgettable performances and gorgeous production with enough behind-the-scenes dysfunction to fuel several albums.
And that's part of what makes this record so fascinating.
While Fleetwood Mac was creating these songs, relationships within and around the band were falling apart.
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were separating.
Christine and John McVie had divorced.
Mick Fleetwood's marriage was also collapsing.
Yet all five members still had to walk into the studio, look one another in the eye, play on each other's songsâand sometimes sing harmonies on songs that were very clearly about each other.
Somehow, out of all that chaos came:
RUMOURS.
The classic Fleetwood Mac lineup of:
đ¤ Stevie Nicksđ¸ Lindsey Buckinghamđš Christine McVieđ¸ John McVieđĽ Mick Fleetwood
created an album filled with heartbreak, anger, optimism, jealousy, love, resentment and some of the most recognizable songs of the 1970s.
And the Hooligans are going through the entire record.
đľ TRACK BY TRACK
âSecond Hand Newsâ â Lindsey Buckingham kicks open the door with an upbeat song hiding plenty of relationship pain underneath.
âDreamsâ â Stevie Nicks delivers one of Fleetwood Mac's defining performances and one of the most recognizable songs of the band's career.
âNever Going Back Againâ â Buckingham strips things down and lets his intricate acoustic guitar work take center stage.
âDon't Stopâ â Christine McVie turns the end of a relationship into one of rock's great statements about moving forward.
âGo Your Own Wayâ â Buckingham transforms anger and heartbreak into one of Fleetwood Mac's signature rock songs.
âSongbirdâ â Christine McVie delivers a beautiful, intimate performance that provides an emotional counterweight to the drama surrounding the record.
âThe Chainâ â the only song on the album credited to all five membersâand arguably the musical embodiment of Fleetwood Mac itself.
âYou Make Loving Funâ â Christine McVie delivers another infectious classic while her personal life provides yet another chapter in the album's extraordinary backstory.
âI Don't Want to Knowâ â Buckingham and Nicks bring their vocal chemistry to a deceptively upbeat song about a relationship going wrong.
âOh Daddyâ â Christine McVie takes the album into darker, more atmospheric territory.
âGold Dust Womanâ â Stevie Nicks closes the original album with one of its most mysterious and haunting performances.
We're discussing the songs, songwriting, musicianship, production, personalities and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the creation of Rumours.
But most importantly...
WE'RE DECIDING HOW GOOD THE ALBUM ACTUALLY IS.
Nearly five decades of acclaim is one thing.
The Hooligans actually agreeing with everybody else?
That's another matter entirely. đ
We'll give you our individual opinions, favorite songs, songs we may not love quite as much, and ultimately decide where Rumours belongs among the greatest albums in rock history.
And because this is still Hooligan Nation, that's not all!
