Description
1942 WINTER SCIENCE FICTION QUARTELY
Drones Target Russian Space Program Infrastructure
Anatoly Zak and David Livingston: Zak reports on recent Ukrainian drone strikes against vital Russian space infrastructure, including the Progress aircraft company in Samara and the Plesetsk launch site. These targeted attacks aim to impede the manufacture of Soyuz rockets and delay the deployment of Russia's Rassvet satellite constellation, intended as a military equivalent to Starlink. While Soyuz and Angara rocket systems carry essential surveillance payloads for the Russian military, early Rassvet satellites have encountered operational difficulties, failing to reach intended orbits and risking atmospheric re-entry. Additionally, economic strain from wartime spending and budget deficits threatens Roscosmos, impacting future space station development following the retirement of the International Space Station.
