Getting Worse is a Sign You're Getting Better.

Published 9 hours ago
Description

Have you ever started learning something new and suddenly thought, "Wait… was I always this bad?"

You're practicing. You're studying. You're putting in the work. And somehow, instead of feeling more confident, you feel like you're getting worse.

You're noticing every mistake. You're overanalyzing your technique. You're suddenly aware of tension, breath, your tongue, your larynx, your audition nerves, and it can feel like you've uncovered an endless list of things that are "wrong" with you.

But what if that awareness is actually a sign that you're making progress?

In this episode of The Singer's Path Podcast, Sarah Bishop introduces the Four Stages of Competence, a framework that explains the uncomfortable stages we move through whenever we're learning and developing a skill. She focuses on the first two stages, unconscious incompetence and conscious incompetence—and explains why becoming aware of what you don't know can temporarily make you feel less capable, even as you're moving forward.

Sarah shares examples from singing, acting, auditioning, and her own training journey, including what it felt like to finally become aware of a technical problem and then be completely frustrated that she couldn't consistently fix it yet.

This episode is a reminder to give yourself some dang grace.

Because sometimes "I'm struggling more than I used to" doesn't mean you're failing. It means you're finally aware enough to grow.
