Patrick Walters makes the case for giving yourself a lot of opportunities to succeed in life. At 12 years old, he never imagined he'd become a professional artist — his early plan was to pursue art while also working as a psychologist, assuming both could be a thing.

But then he stopped. He didn't enjoy psychology in university and realized it wasn't actually what he wanted; what he really wanted was to become a full-time artist and pursue it. So he had to shift. And the key, he says, is that he had steps in place in between — without them, he would have been faltering. In fact, he was, until he made those changes. Give yourself options, and be willing to pivot when something isn't it.
