September 9 | Pay Attention to the Small Patterns

September 9 | Pay Attention to the Small Patterns

Published 4 weeks ago
Description

Today’s reading from Proverbs 6–7 and 2 Corinthians 2 invites us to pay attention to the small patterns that quietly shape who we are becoming. Both passages remind us that formation rarely happens all at once. It develops through repeated choices, familiar rhythms, and the things we allow to become normal over time.

In Proverbs, Solomon points to the ant as an example of steady preparation and then warns about the danger of “a little extra sleep, a little more slumber.” The concern isn’t one moment of rest, but a pattern that slowly becomes a way of life. Wisdom teaches us to notice our rhythms because repeated habits eventually shape our character, our responsibilities, and the direction of our lives.

In 2 Corinthians 2, Paul calls the church to respond to a repentant person with forgiveness, comfort, and renewed love. He recognizes that our responses can also become patterns, and that unresolved hurt or an unwillingness to forgive can give the enemy room to work. Spiritual maturity includes becoming aware of what is forming in us through the way we repeatedly respond to people.

Together, these passages invite us to notice the small patterns we may normally overlook. They remind us that our lives are being shaped through ordinary rhythms, repeated responses, and familiar ways of thinking, and they encourage us to reflect on what those patterns are slowly forming within us.
