Back to EpisodesJames part 5 - Humble Yourself Before The Lord And He Will Lift You Up
Description
Peaceful churches do not happen by accident, and James refuses to let us blame “the atmosphere” or “the times we live in”. As we open James 3:18 through chapter 4, we follow the sudden turn from peacemakers to wars and ask the uncomfortable question: what is really driving fights and quarrels among Christians? Richard Buse is joined by Paul Blackham and mission worker Robbie Langford, and together we let James diagnose the heart, not just the behaviour.
We talk about Christian maturity and why conflict so often grows from unmanaged desires and a prayer life that has gone quiet. James’ line “you do not have because you do not ask God” lands hard, and so does his warning about asking with wrong motives. We explore “unanswered prayer” and the difference between using “in Jesus’ name” as a slogan and praying in a way that actually matches Jesus’ character and priorities. The result is a practical challenge: move from “what do I want?” to “what does Christ want, and what do others truly need?”
Then James raises the stakes, calling friendship with the world spiritual adultery. We unpack what worldliness looks like when idols are not statues but comfort, success, possessions, or reputation. The hope is just as strong as the warning: God gives grace to the humble, and James’ verbs give us a path back: submit, resist, come near, wash, purify, humble yourself. We also tackle slander, gossip, judging, and why even confident planning must bow to “if the Lord wills”.
If this conversation challenges you, share it with a friend, subscribe for the next study in James, and leave a review so others can find it. Where do you feel the strongest pull between God’s way and your own?
