Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

When you tell someone:

“Don’t get your hopes up,”

you’re warning them not to become too excited or optimistic yet, because the thing they want may not happen.

It doesn’t necessarily mean:

“It won’t happen.”

It means:

“Be careful. Nothing is certain yet.”

Example:

Imagine your favorite singer is supposed to perform in your city.

A friend sends you a message:

“I heard they might add a second concert date!”

You immediately start checking tickets.

Then your friend says:

“Don’t get your hopes up. It’s only a rumor so far.”

In other words:

It could happen.

But don’t start celebrating yet.
