Description
At 2:35 on Labor Day afternoon, Donald Trump posted a video presented as showing him near Ground Zero hours after the attacks. The footage was actually from two days later. Hours afterward, he told Trey Gowdy that he went down almost immediately and “worked long and hard.” Nearly 25 years later, the evidence still has not caught up with the stories. Every retelling puts him closer to the rubble, working harder, staying longer, and claiming a bigger place in a tragedy that belongs to the victims, their families, and the people who actually answered the call.

The Breakdown:
Trump’s Labor Day post and the contrast between his immaculate suit in the old footage and his account of working at Ground Zero
His repeated claim that he sent 100 or 200 workers to the rescue effort, and the investigations that found no evidence to substantiate it
Former FDNY deputy chief Richard Alles telling PolitiFact: “I was there for several months. I have no knowledge of his being down there.”
The Newsday account placing Trump near the site two days after the attacks, wearing a pressed shirt and suit with his phone to his ear
His television interview as the catastrophe unfolded, boasting that 40 Wall Street was now the tallest building downtown, even though 70 Pine Street was taller
His claims to Howard Stern about seeing the attacks from Midtown, his congressional comments about asbestos, and the claim that his book predicted the attacks
The anniversary message to “haters and losers,” and the unsupported story about thousands of Muslims celebrating in New Jersey
His claims about helping clear rubble and losing “hundreds of friends,” followed by the use of the tragedy as a benchmark for his television ratings
The first-responder ceremony where he said he spent time at the site, and the later story about warning firefighters that a building would collapse
Even the towers growing in the retelling: Trump telling Gowdy “115 stories,” when the Twin Towers were 110 stories tall
The $150,000 his company received through a recovery program, and the city comptroller’s review finding no record of his pledged $10,000 Twin Towers Fund donation
Reports that Trump changed plans to attend the anniversary ceremony at Ground Zero after organizers upheld the rule against political speeches
His expected appearance at the Pentagon instead, and JD Vance presenting the split appearances as a matter of logistics
Why the anniversary should center the families, firefighters, and recovery workers whose lives were forever changed
My mother’s request: check your voter registration, including reports of voters on Texas’s “suspense” list, and keep checking before the midterms
The sign over public toilets in Victoria, British Columbia, reading “The President Donald J. Trump Memorial,” and its removal after attracting attention
Why humor remains one of the oldest tools of resistance, reaching people, puncturing vanity, and reminding us that we can still resist and find hope
