Back to EpisodesDow Drops 628 Points as $100 Oil & Fed Hike Fears Hit Wall Street | The Street Brief
Description
Wall Street started the shortened trading week with a warning shot. The Dow plunged 628 points, oil moved within striking distance of $100 a barrel, Treasury yields pushed toward 5%, and traders increased bets that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates next week.
On the September 8 Closing Bell edition of The Street Brief, host Todd M. Schoenberger, CEO of CrossCheck Media Inc., breaks down the biggest stories moving markets, business and the global economy.
Software stocks were among the day's biggest casualties, with Salesforce and Intuit falling roughly 4% and ServiceNow losing 5%. But the AI infrastructure trade told a very different story: Intel jumped 9%, while Qualcomm gained after announcing a major agreement under which Amazon could purchase as much as $60 billion in Qualcomm AI data-center chips and related products. Qualcomm is targeting $15 billion in annual data-center chip revenue by 2029.
Todd also examines Bitcoin's retreat below $80,000, record-setting copper prices, the 10-year Treasury yield's march toward 5%, and why Thursday's PPI and Friday's CPI reports could become critical for the Federal Reserve's September 15–16 meeting.
Beyond Wall Street, the episode covers escalating Middle East tensions and their impact on global energy markets, tomorrow's highly anticipated Apple event, developments in Washington, and Reuters' plan to bring more than 70 years of historic television news footage into the AI era.
One correction worth noting from the broadcast: the circulating discussion about U.S. action near Iran's Kharg Island should not be characterized as a confirmed U.S. bombing of the island itself. Reuters reports that U.S. strikes on Saturday targeted three Iranian tankers near the Kharg Island export hub.
