Saturn South Pole Decagon Mystery
Let's start at Saturn, where new Hubble imagery has revealed a striking decagon around the planet's south pole. Saturn's north pole has long been famous for its hexagon, but this new ten-sided pattern suggests the giant planet can support more than one kind of large-scale atmospheric geometry. Scientists think the shape may be linked to wave patterns where fast-moving and slower-moving gases interact, and the big question now is whether this southern decagon will prove as stable as the north polar hexagon.
