Back to EpisodesExodus Chapter 10: Plague 8 - The Plague of Locusts
Description
The eighth plague brings Egypt another step closer to complete destruction. Whatever survived the hail is now threatened by an overwhelming swarm of locusts, leaving Pharaoh and his servants with almost nothing left to depend upon. Yet before the locusts ever arrive, God identifies the deeper issue behind the entire confrontation: “How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me?” Egypt has witnessed plague after plague, and even Pharaoh’s own servants recognize that the nation is being ruined, but they still attempt to negotiate the terms of obedience.
In this episode, we explore why locusts become such a powerful image of divine judgment throughout Scripture, how the east wind brings them into Egypt like an invading army, and why this plague continues the unraveling of Egypt’s created order. We examine the Egyptian gods associated with crops, harvest, and protection, the destruction of the last vegetation left by the hail, and the growing pattern of anti-creation as Egypt’s livestock, crops, land, and eventually even its light are progressively stripped away.
We also follow the imagery of locusts beyond Exodus, from the covenant curses of Deuteronomy to the prophets and John the Baptist’s unusual diet of locusts and wild honey. Along the way, we discuss the contrast between Egypt and the Promised Land, the importance of remembering God’s works from generation to generation, and the difference between genuine repentance and simply wanting judgment to stop. Pharaoh once again admits that he has sinned and asks for forgiveness, but his concern remains the same: “remove this death from me.”
