Episode Details

Deep in the shadow of Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, where thick woods and steep ridges swallow sound, an unsettling cry shattered the winter silence of 1903. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories for Tennessee Tales Tuesday, Allen Sircy tracks the chilling legend of "Whistling Jack"—a sleek, shadowy predator larger than any hound, with burning red eyes and an unnatural, whistling exhalation that sounded like escaping steam turning into a human hiss. What began as an eerie mountain echo soon erupted into widespread panic across the coal mining towns of Victoria and Whitwell, leaving livestock mauled, armed posses empty-handed despite a five-dollar bounty, and hardened miners running for their lives along moonlit mountain roads. From terrified eyewitness accounts to phantom sightings along the rocky bluffs of Monteagle, discover the enduring Appalachian mystery of a beast that defied every known predator in the woods—and learn why those who travel the dark hollows of the Sequatchie Valley after sunset are still warned never to answer a whistle in the trees.
